One Less was conceived in a classroom at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in Monterey, California.

It's founders - Alethia Jimenez, Alisha Nguyen, Mindy Chiang, Sheena Nayak and Michelle Gregory - became interested in the issue of human trafficking through a research project prepared for their Human Rights Needs Assessment class. Through their research,  they   learned about the scope of the problem and felt motivated to take action.

After winning an initial grant from MIIS in 2008, they were able to register the organization as a 501(c)3. In 2010, One Less became a  certified NGO also in Mexico, becoming an   international NGO
